At the beginning of the series, Willis (Jimmy O
Plot
Background actor Willis Wu witnesses a crime in Chinatown while working on a TV show. As he investigates, he uncovers a criminal network and experiences the spotlight he’s always dreamed of. Yang), Fatty (Ronny Chieng), and Carl (Chau Long) see Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) on TV and discuss her possible ethnicity: Carl declares, "she looks Thai" while Fatty claims, "Dude, she’s obviously Korean. Meet your Asians." In fact, Bennet is the child of a white mother and a Chinese father.
It’s a mystery, you’ll have to watch it to find out
Earlier in her acting career, she changed her last name from Wang to Bennet (her father’s name) after encountering casting agents who said they couldn’t cast her as Asian or Asian-American characters, but her name prevented her from being considered for white characters. This is a show that goes against the grain in a way that can be a bit annoying or a disservice to the plot at times. I can’t say it’s beautiful or perfect, but it has some fantastic qualities. The acting is fantastic, with the actors varying their acting quality and style depending on the genre of the particular scene, constantly shifting between parody and existential mystery.
The police procedural, the characters are fun to watch on screen
The direction, cinematography, writing/dialogue style, and even the color grading all change depending on the type of police procedural the particular scene is parodying, though most of it falls into the more general category of bland, low-budget, blue-collar police TV. It feels cheesy at times, the visual effects/direction of some scenes feel weak and distracting, some of the b-plots aren’t particularly interesting and seem to clash with the tone of the show, and sometimes some of the jokes or plot twists are a bit obvious before they happen. The positives go a long way in making it still fun to watch, but they don’t really go anywhere. The chemistry between the leads is very strong, the comedy is a treat for anyone who gets through a silly movie.
And at the cost of enjoying the thing I was watching?
It’s a cop drama parody, a cop drama, a period piece, a touching family story, a coming-of-age adventure, and an existential allegory, but the end result is less than the sum of its parts, no matter how beautiful those parts are. The main thing, though, is that it sacrifices its own gratification and entertainment value to serve its many intertwined, painfully obvious allegories. It was intentionally made to be and ends up being a bit uncomfortable and unsatisfying, to serve a point, but that point was so beaten to death throughout the show that this was just… unnecessary.
