Abrams had an almost entirely different cast
Plot
Survivors of a plane crash must work together to survive on a seemingly deserted tropical island by J.J. Find out which celebrities were missed from one of the most popular TV series of all time. Sawyer’s character was originally supposed to be a street-smart, business-suited senior citizen con artist from Buffalo, New York. However, when Josh Holloway forgot a line during his audition and later kicked a chair in frustration and cursed loudly, the writers liked the twist he gave Sawyer’s character and decided to write Sawyer as a Southern drifter, darker. Jin and Sun are married and share the last name “Kwon”, which becomes an important plot point in the final season. However, when Koreans marry, the wife never takes her husband’s last name. In fact, in Korea you’re not even allowed to marry with the same last name, except in rare cases..
Then came “Lost”
[repeated phrase] Desmond Hume: See you in another life bro.. The weird opening titles are drawn by J.J. Abrams on his laptop as a black and white homage to The Twilight Zone. Edited in Lost: The Journey (2005). With so many high-quality shows ending or recently canceled (Friends, Frasier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) and many others (The West Wing, Smallville) declining in quality, not to mention murky and tasteless “reality” programming, I had written off television as a medium of entertainment. I was seriously considering giving up my TV and cable subscription in favor of a computer screen and broadband connection. I missed the first few episodes but managed to catch them thanks to BitTorrent.
Now I’m hooked
There are several things I love about this show, but here’s a short list: 1) Great, smart, multi-layered writing. There are several mysteries here, and every answer we get raises more questions. 2) Rich, complex characters. Just when you think you’ve found a character, you discover something new about them that is often surprising or even shocking. I enjoy the birth and development of different relationships. 3) Strong interpretations. This is a remarkable cast of mostly seasoned Actors and a couple of newcomers, and they all do stellar work.
4) Mysterious and fascinating environment
Even some cameos featured recognizable and talented Actresses (eg Mira Furlan, Victoria Hamel). Of the four main story elements you learn in school—plot, character, theme, and setting—the latter is often the poor, overlooked cousin. Not here. The island is dangerous, beautiful, disturbing and undeniably fascinating. He is like his own character. Part of the fun of this show is uncovering the island’s secrets. 5) Thematic depth.
I am grateful to see this show succeed
This is not just a desert island soap opera. There are plenty of metaphors and themes to explore here, such as the challenges of morality; on the nature of communities and civilization; about our relationship with nature/environment; and spirituality, even mysticism. Too often lately, I’ve committed to a quality show early on (“Wonderfalls” being the most recent and regrettable example) only to see a nervous network cancel it prematurely. Hopefully "Lost" is going to be a long string of hits: if its makers, Cast and crew maintain the level of quality shown so far, I’m sure it will.
