Plot
After the events of Batman (2022), Oz Cobb aka The Penguin is making a play to take the reins of Gotham’s underworld. Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti talk about the process of making The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of The Penguin Smoking Tobacco in Batman (2022), but failed. However, his own series portrays the character as an occasional tobacco user, preferring cigars.
It fits the tone and atmosphere perfectly
The umbrella drops and the logo is replaced with the Warner Bros logo. The Ghost of Graham Norton: Lady Gaga / Demi Moore / Colin Farrell / Richard Ayoade / Jack Savoretti (2024). Small, dirty and dark, but Farrell manages to capture that flash of charm that Gandolfini did in Tony Soprano. There are similarities with sopranos, especially in tone.
Where to start with Farrell
There’s a lot of dark stuff in this opening series, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone without breaking it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented actors star in roles like this and the makeup/cgi or whatever exactly they did to make him a penguin physically not only passes the eye test but looks incredibly realistic. There’s always the risk that if the makeup job isn’t good enough or is a bit poor, it can be completely distracting.
I was not disappointed, in fact I was blown away
In Penguin, it improves his performance and the overall quality of the show because it’s such a damn good job. And Farrell as an actor is completely immersed in this role. I might be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors until this show, but I think this will get him the accolades he deserves. I never go straight to new shows because I like to watch all the episodes at once, but I wanted to see how this one actually played out.
